About Oxbow Nature Study Area

Oxbow Nature Study Area is nestled in the middle of Reno right on the Truckee River. This urban oasis is host to many species of wildlife including many species of raptors, black bears, bobcats, beavers, otters, and many more! The site has year-round bathrooms, picnic areas, and trails for visitors to explore.

There are several water features to explore in the area. An oxbow pond is a big attraction and how the park got its name. This is a great place to view beaver and beaver activity as well as waterfowl. Boardwalks run parallel to the beautiful Truckee River giving visitors a great view of the river as well as river access. Trails wind through the area to showcase the river, pond, and wetland habitats.

Many groups host bird walks and nature walks at Oxbow including us! You can check out what programs we’ve got going on at Oxbow here (link to clinics)

We host school field trips! Contact Margaret Lord at margaret.lord@ndow.org to learn more!
